EAST CAPE BAJA SUR 2003

This year I went to the East Cape with some of the PETCO Albacore charter group from May 18th to the 23rd, fishing 4 days. Along with me was Lisa Yanni, Kevin Drath and his wife Amy, Craig Parsons and Scott   from Quality Reptile. Also along was Walter Rosenkranz from PETCO, who has fished with me before on my boat. He was transferred to Texas, so he didn't have an opportunity to join us for the Albacore. Craig, Scott and Walter planned to skip a day of fishing to do some reptile "hunting". We fished 4 days on the MARISOL and 3 days on the RONNY.

Lisa and I were on the MARISOL all 4 days with Ronny Verdugo as captain and Poncho as deck hand. Walter was aboard for three days and Kevin one day. Craig, Scott and Kevin were on the RONNY, skippered by Alehandro. The challenge on this trip was the lack of live bait. They had something called 'lisas' which looked like little 'yellow stripped' bass. The fish we were after were not receptive, so the second, third and fourth day we paid for dead mackeral.

The first day both boats went north up toward Cerralavo Island. Nothing but tuna up that way. We couldn't get a bite on the Marisol. For a while the RONNY and MARISOL were fishing the same area, and about 2:00pm we went in different directions. The MARISOL headed South and the RONNY went East. The RONNY picked up 6 tuna, the largest was 36 pounds, hooked by Kevin on a Channel Island Chovi Fish Trap. They were all trolled fish. On the MARISOL, we trolled through porpoise with small feathers and hootchies, but no fish. We came back with no flags flying, while the Ronny had 6 tuna flags.

The second day we headed south for marlin.  Walter, Lisa and I rotated trolling positions. We got a strike in the second half hour on the short bait, so Walter got to bring in the fish. The rod was too short for him, but he made do, bringing the fish in within a half hour, with minimal help from the boat. For this trip, I bought a new lure, a Sevenstrand EAL - Electronic Acoustic Lure. It is activated with a battery that lasts 8 hours. I had used it the day before with no fish iting anything, so I thought I had a couple of hours left. Just before the strike, I was tempted to bring it in a switch to the second battery, but resisted the temptation. The EAL was in the port corner with a mold craft lure in the starboard corner, more as teasers. We put two smaller Zuker lures on the outriggers. I rigged all my lures with a stiff rigged single mustad 7691SS hook. The skipper didn't like that rigging and had me switch them out for Area Rule double hook rigs I had in some other lures I brought along. On the EAL, the trailing hook was still within the skirt, but not by much. The marlin was hooked on the first hook. The lure was out about an hour before the hook up. After the hookup, I switched to the second battery, but confirmed that battery one was still working.

The third day was the reptile hunt. Walter went with Craig and Scott, so Kevin joined us. I had a little battery life in the first battery, so I left it in. There was a point I thought about bringing it in to change the battery, but that's about the time we hooked up. I checked it after the hookup and it was working, but by noon it was dead, so I put the second battery in. All we found were 4 dorado on the jigs, none on the EAL. Biggest was 33 pounds

We went almost to the Gordo banks. We didn't have any live bait. One dorado hit the jigs, but that was it. We saw about a dozen marlin fins, but they wouldn't hit he jigs or the dead bait. We saw one boat hooked up on a marlin in the morning. Only saw two marlin flags flying for the day. The other boat went for tuna, but struck out.

Notable catches
Walter - 140 lb Marlin
Kevin - 36 lb tuna
Lisa - 35 lb Dorado

Well I trolled the EAL 4 days. Marty Morris advised me that I should have gotten more batteries, but it was too late to order them and there wasn't anyone in San Diego to get them from. He was right. I would recommend at least one battery per 8 hour fishing day. I used channel locks to push the plug in, added Teflon tape to the threads and hand tightened the cap. Most of the time I could hear the lure working above the diesel engine.
