2004 Tuna Season

Based on the San Diego sport fleet, data from the tuna catch history for the past 4 years suggests we are tracking to have an Albacore season as opposed to a Yellowfin season.

Fishermanís Landing has reported the Point Loma Sport Fleet historical catch back to 1986. In the years when we have a high Albacore count, we have a low Yellowfin count. Look at 2002, 2001 and 1999. The Albacore count for the year was over 100,000 and the Yellowfin count did not exceed 3,000 fish. In 2003, we had 72,405 Albacore and only 4,559 Yellowfin. However, in 1998 with 60,028 Albacore we had 48,144 Yellowfin, so it would appear that somewhere below 60,000 and 70,000 Albacore is when the Yellowfin appear in significant numbers.

For the past 5 years, I have been tracking the counts by day for both Point Loma and Seaforth. I use the cumulative Albacore catch to see how 2004 is trending compared to the past 4 years. As of the July 4th weekend, we have surpassed the trend for the best Albacore year, which was in 2002 when we caught 134,709 for the season. We have 30, 051 Albacore in compared to 28,285 in 2002.
